Ascension Thursday 2024

In the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we witness the disciples standing in awe as Jesus ascends into heaven. Their eyes were fixed on the sky, trying to comprehend the magnitude of what they had just witnessed.

However, in that very moment, the angels appeared, dressed in white garments, and challenged the disciples:  "Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky?"

In other words: "Get your heads out of the clouds and do something!"

These words echo through time and speak directly to us today. It is natural for us to be captivated by the wonders and mysteries of our faith.

The love of God, the sacrifice of Jesus, and the gift of salvation are truly awe-inspiring realities.

However, if we become solely fixated on these wonders without translating them into action, we miss the purpose for which we have been called.

Our faith is not meant to be a passive experience. It is not about solely marveling at heavenly things. Rather, it is an invitation to actively participate in the work of God's kingdom.

We are called to be witnesses of the risen Christ in the world. We are called to be agents of His love and mercy, bringing hope and healing to those around us.

The angels' exhortation to the disciples not only challenges them to action but also offers a promise. They assure the disciples that the same Jesus who ascended into heaven will return in the same way.

This promise reminds us that our actions have eternal significance. The love we share, the service we render, and the impact we have on others are not in vain but contribute to the unfolding of God's plan.

Let us listen to the message of the angels today. Let us not remain stagnant, staring at the sky. Instead, let us embrace a faith that moves us to action.

Let us go forth and share the good news of Jesus Christ. Let us extend His love and compassion to those in need. Let us be a living testimony of His transformative power.

May this feast of the Ascension inspire us to get our heads out of the clouds and engage wholeheartedly in the work of God's kingdom.

May we be filled with the courage and conviction to make a difference in the world. And may the Holy Spirit empower and guide us every step of the way.
